Oceans (2014-2015)
In 2014, I started living part-time on the coast of southern California and it was out of this experience that a new body of work emerged. In this collection of semi-abstract seascapes I am exploring variations that I see in the light and color of the ocean - as each day and each moment - is distinct. I begin each painting with a single brushstroke which anchors the horizon both literally on the page and figuratively in the present moment. With subsequent brushstrokes, I manipulate the often unpredictable medium of watercolor to create an interplay between sky above and sea below. With watercolor there is a delicate balance between pushing the paint and letting the paint go where it wants to go. This is where the magic and beauty happens - both in paint and in life. In these works, I strive to capture the overall effect of the ocean and the underlying movement of the currents and tides in a linear, horizontal arrangement of color and tone, while connecting the infinite in nature to a deep sense of meaning that when we get quiet and still, we experience in our daily lives.
